Veiled Presence

Concealment has become a property of the slate itself. The surface declines to finish resolving, and whatever waits inside it stays exactly where it is.

A pale passage surfaces and might be a face. Give it long enough and a brow appears, then a cheek, then the suggestion of an eye set back in shadow. Look again and the surface has taken all of it back.

The imposed kind can be resented. Here the ruled lines and combed blocks go about their own business, arranged with evident care and aimed at nobody. The withholding settles into a condition of the room rather than a decision taken against anyone in it.

Time stretches around it and a room slows to match. What surfaces depends entirely on how long anyone gives it.
