Held Interval

Only when a thing runs short do we begin to measure it.

By now the dark holds most of the surface, and the light that remains is no longer given freely. It is admitted instead through a few narrow openings, counted and evenly spaced, each keeping back a measured portion of the day. What was once a flood has become an allowance, let in a little at a time so that some of it might last. Even the warmth low in the field is banked now rather than spent.

This measuring is not meanness but mercy. It makes the little that is left last beyond its due.

So the last of the light is spent slowly, in measured intervals, the way something scarce and precious is spent: a little at a time, nothing wasted, nothing hurried.
