Discipline and abandon spend a life at odds, and are cut from exactly the same cloth.
Here at last they meet as equals. A ruled order runs the surface edge to edge, exact and flush, set out with the certainty of a plan. Over it moves a heavy dark line of the very same black, raised where the order lies flat and free where it is fixed. It casts its own shadow and goes where it likes. Neither gives way. They hold the ground at even weight, two tempers of one black, no longer at war.
The rule and the gesture, so long opposed, prove to have been one substance all along, only living two ways. What they settle into is a rare equilibrium: the quiet of two forces that no longer need to win.
