Fracture Line I

The strongest part of a broken thing is often the line along which it came apart.

The dark has parted here into separate masses, and the pale opening between them is the spine the whole composition hangs from: a single continuous interval, bearing the weight the solid forms cannot, holding them in place precisely by holding them apart.

Seen long enough, a fracture stops being damage and becomes architecture. These masses keep their shape only through the exact distance kept between them; pressed back together, they would collapse into rubble. The gap is not where the thing failed. It is where it found its frame.

What endures here is the interval itself: the quiet strength of a space held open, and unwilling to close.
