Divided Gaze

A bar laid across a face does not erase it. The head stays entirely present beneath, unmistakably someone, and the withholding reads as deliberate precisely because so much has been left intact.

Just enough escapes to confirm what is being kept back. A brow, the ridge of a nose, a mouth. What is denied is not existence but access, which is the crueller of the two withholdings and by far the harder to protest. Everyone has been looked at this way, catalogued before being known. The composition carries that indignity without flinching, and without any appeal for sympathy.

Rooms near it hold their formality. Conversation lowers without anyone deciding to lower it.
