Two Figures

Closeness is not the same as sameness. Two presences share this ground and almost nothing about them matches. One is soft and articulated, leaning into its own weight; the other upright and stiller, already closer to monument than to body.

They do not touch. The distance between them is the real subject, and it is not empty: it holds the ordinary objects of a life lived at close range.

This is companionship as it actually works, two separate solitudes agreeing to occupy the same ground, neither dissolving into the other. One of them may already have crossed into memory. The pairing holds either way.

Nothing about it insists, and yet the space around it feels quietly companioned: warm, unhurried, untroubled by the distance it keeps.
